Meet Max Dalton! I'll let him do his own introduction, since I don't think I could do it justice:

In order to stop being a stranger to you I will tell you some things about me. I'm Maxim Dalton, an illustrator living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've been illustrating since I was two or three, just like any other kid, and began to take it seriously at the age of thirteen. In the lats twenty years I've been involved in several projects like drawing humor strips for a local magazine, creating animations for the TV and doing some editorial illustration. I'm very open-minded and my interests are very dissimilar, but I'm not going to enumerate them all because I don't want to bore you. I just may say that I like to write, oil paint, take photographs, play music and read about animal behavior. I speak five languages and lived in Barcelona and Paris. I also spent some time in New York. I feel comfortable when I find myself surrounded by mid century objects and imagery, and they all inspire me to do the best thing I know: to draw. Now, you can call me Max.

He sounds pretty rad to me. His illustrations are totally legit and it was hard to select only a few for here. I highly recommend looking through his illustrations and then checking out his blog. Personally, I'd love to have his Cocktail Party Cut Out Set. Brilliant ;)

'T' Shirts by Masashi Kawamura

A totally awesome concept from Masashi Kawamura. Combining typography and fashion into these clever "T" Shirts:

‘T’ shirts are T shirts that was designed to have the silhouette of 5 famous typefaces; Helvetica, Caslon, Baskerville, Courier, and Cooper Black.

In the world of typography, terms such as typeface, character, body, etc are used to describe the form of a letter. The reason why they use expressions closely related to a human body, is perhaps because each different letter has a distinct quality and personality, in a similar way that us humans are all unique.

In the designing process of these shirts, I aimed to capture the character of each typeface and tried to give them a unique look and presence once worn. By collaborating with Itaru Yonenaga, I feel we were able to produce a collection of shirts that is not only conceptual, but wearable as real clothes. I hope you will find your favorite shirt/typeface.

The Helvetica one is definitely my favorite, besides the obvious reasons. It's hip, minimal, and kinda androgynous. These will be available for purchase in January, but I must warn you, they're incredibly expensive (Helvetica is the cheapest at $230). I don't think I'd be able to justify buying one right now. When I have the money, though, you just wait...

Smiths Album Covers

Not sure what it is about Morrissey's obsession with serif fonts and duotone images. I'm currently endeavoring on a poster that's based off a Smiths album cover. It... Wasn't too hard, to be honest. I suppose, even though these covers sort of lack in design (except I suppose The Queen is Dead... And Louder Than Bombs. I can't explain my attraction to that one..) they are very distinctive. It makes sense, though, that Morrissey would insist on designing them himself, despite the fact he had no sort of experience in that kind of thing.

My favorite teacher in class just now said we are NOT ALLOWED to use Helvetica in our current project, because she says it's too easy to use it, and it has no character, etc... This surprised me first of all because I thought she was a fan. I know she likes the Swiss Style and modern design. How can you like those things and not like Helvetica? Well, bollocks to that. I'm going to continue to use Helvetica in this project and prove its worth. Viva Helvetica!

I like the western style [I actually made something simliar a couple years ago. It's nice to see mine isn't necessarily worse than this one above (though the background texture could use work)]. I also like the bullet wound. Movie posters should be more bold like this. It's eye-catching and interesting. Reminds me somehow of working at a movie theater and seeing all the new posters come in and choosing which ones to put up. Memories.

I'm convinced that Erin Jang has the coolest job ever. She designs incredibly immaculate and personalized wedding invitations for couples (who have them letter pressed to perfection), and used to do awesome spreads for Esquire magazine (she now works for Martha Stewart Living). I'm constantly inspired by her use of type and fun, simple graphics. When designing my sister's wedding invitations recently, I mostly thought about Erin Jang and what she would've done. I'd love to just sit down with her and talk.

This invitation suite above hits me more than anything else she's done so far mostly because of the awesome mid-century graphics and fun colors and patterns. Oh, to be her!

Kellerhouse Inc is behind recent movie posters such as I'm Still Here and The Social Network. They've done a ton of work one would definitely recognize. I love the theme with the type on top of the simple image of the face (see also the special edition DVD packaging for The Man Who Fell To Earth. They're very simple, striking designs. And really memorable. Take a look through their work, it's well worth it.

Bizarrely, I found this blog entry (from more than 2 years ago) through google images. Not, mind you, by looking for Peter Saville designs, or New Order sleeves, but for "Bauhaus." What's weirder is that I just bought this 12" single... Last night at 10 PM.
It compelled me to read the blog and a few of his others, and now I'm really looking forward to getting home and watching this video. If I could listen to ANYONE talk about Bauhaus, it would be Peter Saville. Good blog.

Album Covers- New Order

While I'm on the subject of Peter Saville and his work with musicians, I present the cover for New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies. Before I'd even heard the album, I imagined it to be very melodic and rich. It sort of is, blended with warm synths and stark mechanic beats. I wouldn't say it's my favorite album of theirs, but for some reason (and I can't figure out why), I am simply enamored with the album art. I have a strong urge to look at this every morning when I wake up.

The sudden urge to gush about this cover was spurred by the Royal Mail's Album Cover Stamp Set, which features this album cover... It's a really strange selection. I would've chosen Aladdin Sane over Ziggy Stardust in terms of iconic imagery... Not only that, but I think Unknown Pleasures is far more representative of Saville's iconic career than the aforementioned Power, Corruption & Lies, despite both being great covers.

It might have been 2006 or 2007 when I first saw someone wearing a shirt with the graphic from Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. I didn't know who Joy Division were, but thought they were obviously not the type of band I'd be into (I was exclusively into peppier, poppy british stuff at the time i.e. Coldplay, Keane, Franz Ferdinand, etc...).

Still, the graphic was really arresting, I was very very intrigued. Apparently I wasn't intrigued enough to do anything about my curiosity, since at this point in my life, I wasn't much of an explorer. I never downloaded songs and youtube wasn't as big as it is now. But that band name and that image always stuck in my head.

Sometime later, I was working in a movie theater and a few of my coworkers were buzzing about Control, the Ian Curtis biopic (great movie btw). I watched the trailer with them, where I recognized the song Love Will Tear Us Apart. After that, I timidly asked my coworker if it would be poseur-ish to wear a shirt for a band you've never listened to before. When he asked who, and I answered, he laughed and said he'd lend me some of their albums.

So, he did, and I listened, and was immediately hooked. I truly loved the music and still love it to this day. I never would've thought I'd be so into the post-punk genre, but I really am. Because of Joy Division's music, it gave me a notion that there might be a lot of other musicians I might like from that era. I discovered New Order (who is Joy Division minus Ian Curtis), The Cure, The Smiths, Bowie, and many many others. The music I listen to nowadays really plays a big part in my life, and has indirectly done wonders on my portfolio...

And it's all because of this album cover, which was designed by the brilliant Peter Saville. He was the graphic designer for the now long-dead Factory Records, which practically built the Manchester music scene (a city which produced countless, world-famous acts such as The Smiths and Oasis).
Peter Saville is a huge influence on me, personally, even though most of the work he did was copied or borrowed. Even so, he's a brilliant personality and has been doing work with musicians for more than 30 years.

This one image changed my entire life, which proves, if nothing else, that Graphic Design is capable of doing great things to people.

Best thing ever- My Helvetica necklace

This was sort of a surprise Christmas gift from my mom. I didn't ask for it (I'm usually a bit picky about that), but it was most certainly a welcomed gift. Turns out I did actually ask for something similar (different manufacturer) a while back, which I forgot about until after Christmas. Anyway, it's BEAUTIFUL! It took some getting used to at first because the acrylic is a bit rough around the edges and my collar bones suffered a bit. I've taken to wearing lower-cut shirts so everybody can see it. I've gotten loads of compliments and a few confused looks, but it doesn't matter, because I'm the only one I know who has it, and now, like when I got my Helvetica Badge, my life feels a little more complete.

I'm sort of easing back into blogging here after I nearly gave it up completely. But last night in my Dreamweaver class, we spent the whole time learning about social media. As a designer, it's important for me to do this stuff. Anyway. Here's what I got right now.

You wouldn't have known, but in the last couple months I've been absolutely obsessed with COLOR and everything 60's-related. Especially illustration. Ever since I conceded that I can't use stock images for portfolio pieces, I've been much more illustration-based. It's great, and I've discovered Charley Harper, who (was) a fantastic illustrator of wildlife, more specifically, birds. This serving tray from IKEA totally emulates his style completely. I'm sure I'll have to get it.

Wishlist- Tiny Mid-Century Modern Chairs

Look at these gorgeous little goodies! I have mentioned before that I have a great love of chairs, and today on Mod Cloth I have found these. Scaled down versions of iconic chairs from probably the best and coolest era for design. I would, of course, love to have all of them.

The only downside is that you can't choose which chair you buy--each one is supposed to be a surprise, which I think is silly if you want to collect them all. And this is true for any place you want to buy them from (unless you intend to buy the set of 9)

There are 5, count 'em FIVE volumes of this dynamic collection. So be sure to snatch them up now before they're obsolete.

But despite my strong love of all things British, I have never been... It's fun to see little bits of England here and there--and especially things pertaining to design.

If there are two things I love, it's Graphic Design and the UK.

Anyway, this is great, and strongly recalls the Keep Calm and Carry On posters of old.. I think that's probably what they were going for. It's modern propaganda to be sure. Well done, Britain.

As long as I'm on a geometry kick right now, I thought I'd feature Keane's latest album cover, which is nice and clean. Not sure what it is about triangles and polygons lately, but I'm really drawn to them.

The eyeballs are, you know, a little weird. But I'll let it slide. Such a departure from their last album cover, which was also beautiful for different reasons (and designed by Sanna Annukka)

I was drawn immediately to the cool graphic but THEN I saw what it was for and I had a great moment of comprehension. Great poster!

I don't know why this took me so long, but I have to talk about "Seven Days", which is the work of Christina Couceiro. She's got a fantastic, consistent style. It's well suited to a wide variety of subject matter. Very smart indeed. I'm certainly a fan.

My whole self did the "aww" thing, you know, tilting the head to one side, angling the eyebrows into sympathy mode. It is a fantastically thought out poster and a cute one too. And at the core, the truest of true statements.

Gives me a strong sense of 70's Sci Fi book covers. Can't stop looking at it, it's just so beautiful and artistic. Probably one of the best album covers I've ever seen.

I have always felt this way about design (as long as I've been sober to it at least) but I've never been able to articulate it as finely as this. It's a beautiful sentiment. A bit snobbish, but you can't have good taste without being a bit stuck up...

I have to gush about this group that does letterpress. Not only is their work beautiful, but their site is fantastic! They have a full section dedicated to their inspiration as designers. And on top of it all it's stylish and cute and whimsical and romantic. If I wasn't planning on doing my own wedding invitations, I would be giving these guys a call.

I have to imagine it's a difficult industry to break into, though. But in Minneapolis there is a whole print-buying subculture. My roommate is part of it, you should see our apartment walls...

I actually offered to make the poster for this, and it was discussed briefly, but I didn't hear back. And I'll admit I felt a fleeting stab of bitterness when I saw this, but I must concede it's beautiful. I definitely wouldn't have thought this up.
